Podcast Playlists?

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Talk" @ 12:45 AM

As if the ability to resume podcasts and even send them wirelessly wasn't enough, the 2.5 firmware update also features the ability to watch your podcasts in sequence: when you end one episode of your podcast, it'll automatically advance to the next unplayed episode in the series. This is a change from what used to happen in the device (and still does in the software) in that instead of booting you out of the Now Playing screen and into your last menu screen at the end of an episode, it will now perform the logical action and keep the music/videos playing. This a nice little feature for things like news shows and music podcasts. You can exit out of the loop any time by pressing the back button.

Oh and just as a postscript, I wanted to note that the timing of this could be totally wrong (it may have been a feature since v2), but I've only noticed the video sequencing since the 2.5 update. Any other neat podcasting or general tricks? Let us know in the comments!

EDIT: Clarified play order sequence. It will play the next unplayed episode in reverse-chronological order (plays from the top of the list down).

Tip: Discover 'New and Necessary' Music

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Media" @ 02:30 PM

"You ever wanna hear new stuff but have no idea where to look other than scouring Zune Marketplace?" ACE from ZuneBoards asks in paraphrase, "Well Zune makes it easy with this ever changing playlist! Check it out!*"

If you're a subscriber to the Marketplace, you have no excuse not to check out the New and Necessary playlist. Featuring the latest in hip hop, indie rock, pop, electronica and reggae, plus everything in between, the New and Necessary list is bound to have something you'll like. Personally, my music collection has been stuck in the stone age for years, and this looks to be the kick start I need. Thanks ACE!

Tip: Restore Downloads from Marketplace

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Software" @ 01:30 PM

So you moved to a new PC, you wiped your harddrive, or you just want to re-download a track you deleted long, long ago. Lucky for you, the Zune team built a feature specifically for this purpose, and it's pretty simple to get to.

In the Zune software, go to Settings (in the upper-right hand corner of the screen) and then Account. In the left-hand menu select Purchases (it should be the third option down) and then select the individual songs you want to download, or click Restore All to re-download all of your previously-downloaded songs.

Tip: Command-Line Switches

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Talk" @ 04:30 PM

http://www.withinwindows.com/2008/0...-switches-uris/

Within Windows (a recent favorite site) just published a nice list of command line switches you can use with the Zune software. These are mostly functional (what size to start the window, whether to use DirectX or GDI [a.k.a. "video enhancements"]), but a few are kinda cool. For example, you can create external links to items and actions within the Zune software such as Zune Cards, Marketplace items, and ripping/playing CDs. To view my Zune Card within the software, follow this link. Neat, huh?

Tip: Slideshow in Now Playing

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Software" @ 11:00 PM

http://www.zuneboards.com/tip-of-th...-quick-tip.html

This fresh tip comes courtesy of ZuneBoards' ACE who reminds us there's more than one way to enjoy the Now Playing area. In addition to the default mosaic of your album art, you can also set a slideshow of your own photos to play while you're rocking out.

It's easy enough to do; go to the Pictures tab of your Collection, and right-click the folder or picture you want to start. Click play slideshow and you'll be transfered to the Now Playing screen which should be filled with your pictures. You can alternate between controls for Music or Slideshow by clicking the button toggle.

P.S. ACE: I get the bug too (Vista RTM & SP1--haven't tried XP), but only from photos in the Public user folder. My personal photos load fine.

Spring Cleaning: Purge Those Temp Files

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Content Creation & Management" @ 09:00 PM

http://www.zuneboards.com/tip-of-th...converting.html

This tip has been sitting in my inbox for a while, but it's truly a useful one. With spring right around the corner (yeah--right) it'll soon be time to get rid of your winter baggage. And what better way to do that than get rid of the old crap lying around your hard drive? Every time the Zune software needs to convert a video to portable format, it retains your local copy and keeps temporary copy of the converted output. Over time these can build up, taking precious space on your disk.

Props go out as usual to ACE and the ZuneBoards team for bringing this to my attention, so I'll let them take over from here:

"Simply go to:
  1. Start
  2. Computer (or My Computer on XP)
  3. Right click your C: drive
  4. Choose properties
You should see something like this:"

Unsubscribe From Podcasts, Right On Your Zune!

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Talk" @ 10:00 PM

http://www.zuneboards.com/content/view/256/2/

I guess bufixes weren't all yesterday's firmware update included; reader Nick points out and Zune Boards confirms that a certain oft-requested feature has finally been added—you can now unsubscribe from podcasts right from your device. This is great for discovering podcasts and getting rid of the ones you don't like. Users with the 2.3 firmware update can check it out by playing a podcast and bringing up the menu by pressing the center button on the Zune30 or pressing down on the Zune Pad on the 4, 8, or 80. To unsubscribe, simply select "unsubscribe." Nice, right?

EDIT (12/20/07): A ZuneBoards commenter noticed that using "play all" while looking at an artist no longer sorts the list alphabetically by song title. Now, songs are played in alphabetical order by album title, then track number. Neat.
