Can We Expect New Ads?

You've all seen the "Get a Mac" ads - you know, the ones which make PC seem like the kind of guy you want to hang out with (he's cool and knows a joke or two), over Mac who seems like the boring type (he takes things too seriously). When do you think Apple will introduce "Get an iPod" ads? We do need John Hodgman to make Zune a world of fun.

Zune or iPod: Which One's Right for You?

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/zune-vs-ipod-the-final-word-on-which-should-you-buy-215107.php

"Now it comes down to the final question: should you buy the iPod or the Zune? After 72 hours of deliberating, I'll tell you what I would do."

Ah, yes. That big question on everyone's mind: iPod or Zune? Gizmodo has put up a short head-to-head analysis of the two. I'd say Mac users or existing iPod users who already have a huge library of iTunes Store songs would benefit by sticking to the iPod - unless Microsoft ever comes up with some radical iTunes Store to Zune Marketplace songs transfer scheme, but talk of that has already been quashed. Windows users and those who like a bit of Microsoft integration (Xbox 360, Media Center, etc.) may benefit by picking up a Zune. At the end of the day, it's entirely up to you. Which side are you leaning toward?

Zune on CNN, Upstaged at the End

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 09:00 AM

CNN has published a video interview with NYT's Andrew Ross Sorkin who introduces the Zune to the news team. Unfortunately, the Zune got served at the end by the new iPod shuffle. I'm not denying that the iPod shuffle is an impressive bit of booty, but a lot of mainstream media seem so blinded by Apple's offerings that they tend not to show much interest in other competitors' products. Perhaps we'll see a turnaround in a couple of years time.

Microsoft Launches Zune, Apple Answers Back

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Off-Topic" @ 11:30 PM

http://news.digitaltrends.com/talkback155.html

"The Zune, Microsoft’s next combined hardware/software service has launched and is now available in an impressive 30,000 retail outlets, arguably the most aggressive attempt to take market share from Apple to date. Apple has responded by cutting deals with a number of airline carries to exclusively support iPods for in-flight entertainment. What makes this particularly interesting is that in both cases the two companies appear to be behaving more like the other firm than themselves."

Apple's latest press release hit my inbox yesterday faster than an SR-71 breaking the sound barrier. It was one that was properly timed in an attempt to steal the limelight from the Zune on its launch day. iPod integration in six major airlines? That's pretty impressive, though Rob Enderle at Digital Trends raises a good point about it ruffling a few anti-trust feathers. Can Apple, a dominant company in the media industry, lock out competing firms in critical markets such as this? Only time will tell. It all seems like a sweet deal now, but Apple had better prepare for the repercussions if they ever arise.

ClicZune: iPod vs. Zune

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 07:30 PM

http://www.cliczune.com/2006/11/ipod_vs_zune_10.html

"When it comes the time to choose between the two competing DAPs (Digital Audio Player), many questions can be raised. There is probably no bad decision, but making the right one for you all depends on what “you” want from an mp3 player and why you are buying one. We made a short list of tips to help you choose between the iPod vs. Zune. You could eventually apply those to other DAPs currently on the market. This is certainly not an exhaustive list but it can certainly help you. Have fun!"

ClicZune has published a helpful iPod vs. Zune purchasing guide for DAP newbies. If you're quite the opposite and know each device inside out, from top to bottom, then this guide probably isn't for you. Some of the questions, such as #5, for example, have been given the "basic solution" treatment. Bought a whole lot of iTunes Store tracks? No problem - it's not the end of the world. You can easily combat it by burning the tracks and ripping them into WMA or MP3, or by using a direct conversion tool. And the same holds for PlaysForSure tunes.

Jobs on Zune's Sharing: Too Slow

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 06:52 AM

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15262121/site/newsweek/page/3/

"I've seen the demonstrations on the Internet about how you can find another person using a Zune and give them a song they can play three times. It takes forever. By the time you've gone through all that, the girl's got up and left! You're much better off to take one of your earbuds out and put it in her ear. Then you're connected with about two feet of headphone cable."

That's a quote from Newsweek's interview with Apple's head honcho, Steve Jobs. While the Zune's wireless sharing feature is a little crippled in its current form, I do think it has potential, yet Apple appears to not even embrace the concept. Could this say something about future iPods? Will they never incorporate any sort of sharing capabilities?

Microsoft: "We Won't Be Undercut By Apple"

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 05:30 AM

Well, those of you hoping for Zune to be cheaper than the 30GB iPod have a reason to stay positive. Matt Jubelirer, a product manager for Zune, recently stated the magic words: "we won't be undercut by Apple". And David Caulton, who runs the Zunester blog seems to jibe with it all. While not exactly a word-for-word "it's $249 or less", this is one of the strongest hints yet that the iPod won't be beating the Zune on price this Christmas. Oh, and all that buzz surrounding Wal-Mart and its leak? Like I said in that post, take it with a grain. ;-)
