Zune Dialogue Line in Halo 3

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Smartphone Talk" @ 04:00 PM

http://zunecorps.com/?p=599

"So while playing Halo 3 today on Co-Op with a buddy, I hopped into a Brute Prowler my UNSC buddies had commandeered, and our valiant pilot shouted “Welcome to the Social”. Ode to the Zune, or mere coincidence? I asked my buddy, “did they just say…” to which he nodded his head. So I wasn’t hearing things."

Charlie over at Zune Corps found a little easter egg of sorts in Halo 3. I've been playing Halo 3 a fair bit over the past few days, and it's insanely fun - but also insanely frustrating because my Halo skills aren't quite as good as they need to be with it set on the "Heroic" difficulty setting. Anyone else seen any Zune-related things in Halo 3? I'm waiting for one of the Brutes to try and send me a song instead of clubbing my head in, but that hasn't happened yet... ;-)

Robert McLaws Reviews the Halo 3 Zune

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.windows-now.com/blogs/robert/archive/2007/08/02/review-microsoft-zune-halo-3-special-edition.aspx

"Recently, my girlfriend Nicole surprised me with a rather unexpected birthday present: a brand new Special Edition Halo Zune. I had never experienced a Zune before, so I was really excited to try it out. I've had it for about three weeks now, and I wanted to report my take on this device. My previous music player was a Creative Zen MicroPhoto, which was a pretty decent device, but had a really crappy battery life. I had also used a couple different iPods before, but never owned one. So I have a little bit of experience with PMPs, but there are a bunch out there I still haven't messed with."

Robert McLaws from Windows Now takes the Zune for a spin, and for the most part he likes what he sees. Overall, it's a positive review, though he unfortunately fell for the Zune marketing hype about how "great" it is that it's "software updatable". Guess what: every iPod, and pretty much every MP3 player ever made, is as well. It's called a firmware update. There's no magic here, and on reason for Microsoft to pat themselves on the back for including something that's completely standard. Firmware updates are only something special if they bring new features and make the player even more useful to the owner, and so far the Zune firmware updates haven't made my Zune any better (I didn't have the song skipping problem).

I can explain a couple of things that will make Robert like it even more: first, he says you can't browse the device physically when connected. You can: when the Zune is connected you'll see the name of your Zune on the left-hand side. You can select the type of content you want to view via the buttons up top (photos, videos, music) and when you do you're browsing the live contents of your Zune. See something you don't like? Select it and press the delete button. Nice and simple. I think Robert was hoping for a Windows Explorer-based way of browsing the Zune - you can do that with the hard drive hack, although it's incredibly weak of the Zune team to not officially support this yet. It's equally weak that you can't delete content off the Zune directly using only the Zune. If I'm done watching a movie and want to delete it to free up some space before a friend sends a few albums my way, why should I need to go back to my PC to free up space?

Robert comments on the fact that he's paying for a Napster subscription for his Zen MicroPhoto, and how he'd like to be able to use that with the Zune. That's unlikely to ever happen, but here's an option that makes sense today: he can cancel his Napster subscription, get a Zune Pass subscription, and use the Zune Pass songs on his Zen Micro Photo. Yup, it works. You can't use the Zune desktop software to move music onto a PlaysForSure device, but you can you Windows Media Player 11 to do so and the DRM shouldn't give you any hassles. There's no need to have two music subscriptions, unless Napster or URGE offer something unique that the Zune Marketplace does not.

Halo 3 Zune Sales Look Strong (And Other Notes!)

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 07:46 AM

Yesterday was an exciting day for. I placed my preorder on Halo 3! (Just the standard edition.) What does this have to do with the Zune? Well, given that the Halo 3 Zune is now available at GameStop, it has everything to do with the Zune. When I checked the GameStop site this morning, I noticed that the Halo 3 Zune is listed at the top of the Top Seller list. Not too bad! I am considering purchasing one after the serious damage I did to my Zune last week at the gym. Just stupid carelessness. I'll post pictures of what I did to it with my keys.

But if you already have a Zune and don't really want to buy an entirely new one just to get some of the special pictures that come on it, head on over to 7th Columnist who has posted the images that you'll get if you do buy one. The pictures are really nice but I have to admit that the soundtrack is a big reason that I would want one. If it's too expensive to have my Zune repaired I'll definitely be considering one.

Gizmodo Shows Off Halo 3 Images

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 05:31 AM

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/gallery-for-fanboys/every-exclusive-halo-3-zune-photo-261138.php

Are you still trying to decide whether or not to get the exclusive Halo 3 Zune? Gizmodo is trying to make that decision just a little easier by showing pictures of all the preloaded image content. Click here to see a 135 image gallery of what you’ll get. If you’re hoping to download the images yourself you’ll be disappointed. They’re pictures of the images on the Zune and not the image itself.

In addition to the images, Gizmodo lists the other extras you get in case you haven’t seen them yet. There’s nothing new here except all of the preloaded images. They are definitely drool-worthy! It almost makes me wish I didn’t have a Zune already so I could buy this one. Alas, I’ll just have to hope someone I know gets it.
