Music Metadata: It's Here to Stay

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 01:00 PM

On a private mailing list I'm a part of, the issue of music metadata was brought up - specifically, that the Zune desktop and device software relies on metadata for everything, and if you're the kind of person who has a collection of digital music stretching back 10+ years, there's a good chance it's missing proper metadata. Many people have worked around that by organizing and playing back their music like they would a Word document; via the file system. This is a habit that you should seriously consider breaking, and I'll tell you why. Read more...

Editing Metadata Shouldn't Change Date Added

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 11:00 AM

My default view in the Zune desktop software is the Album view, sorted by date added - this allows me to quickly access albums I've purchased recently, and I love it. What I don't love, however, is how the Zune software will bump an old album to the top of the recently added list when you change it's metadata. In the above screenshot, the LL Cool J album is listed as my newest album added to my collection, but all I did was mark "Phenomenon" as a song that I liked yesterday - the song itself was added to my collection many months ago.

And while I'm at it, it would be great if the Zune itself had a "date added" option for viewing music - because this is the view I like using on the desktop software, I miss having the same thing on my Zune.

Album Tracks Out of Order? Here's The Fix

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Software" @ 03:00 AM

Have you see the above problem with your Zune music library? I've seen it on quite a few of my albums, and I was having a really hard time figuring out what was going on - why was it listing the tracks out of order? I dug deeper into the metadata and discovered something interesting: if the metadata lists the "Disc" field as zero (0) instead of one (1), it will show those tracks before Disc 1 Track 1. I'd never had this problem before, so it's something that the Zune 2.5 software does differently than Windows Media Player 11. Read more...

Tips and Tricks: Organizing Video Content on the Zune

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.zunerama.com/articles_013.php#070405_zune2_story

If you've ever dabbled with video content on the Zune, you know that as far as organization is concerned, there's plenty of room for improvement. This Zune.net How-To page and Zunerama's accompanying article offer some tips and tricks on arduously setting metadata attributes for video content, although what would really help is refined Zune software that handled it all with no additional requirements. Maybe next update.
