The Frustration of Broken Podcasts

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 08:00 PM

That's the kind of thing I've been seeing for about a month now from the Zune desktop software when I try to sync the College Humor video podcast. A couple of months back, it would only happen every few videos, but in December it turned into a problem with every single entry. When I click on the yellow exclamation mark, here's the error I get:

The Web Help link doesn't provide much in the way of useful information. The problem is that the files are MP4 in format, and I kind of doubt that the College Humor people decided to change their format recently (though I suppose anything is possible). So what's going on? I have no idea. I'm not the only one complaining about this issue, but so far there seems to be no fix. I tried un-subscribing to the podcast, and re-subscribing, but that didn't help. A podcast directory is only as good as the content in it, and if Microsoft doesn't have some way of tracking podcasts that are tossing errors into user's faces, it's going to be hard for them to grow the service as a reliable method of subscribing to podcasts. Any ideas?

HD Podcast Selection Growing on Zune Marketplace

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune News" @ 02:53 PM

http://zuneinsider.com/archive/2009...ng-on-zune.aspx

"This week we unveiled a new HD video podcast themed area or page in the Zune Marketplace software. Yes, Zune does have a growing selection of HD video content available. You don't have to wait for the new software or Zune HD device to start enjoying this great crystal clear video content on your big laptop screen. monitor or on a large HD television. The other plus is that it is FREE, yes FREE."

I wasn't aware that the Zune Marketplace even had HD podcasts - being someone that works from home, I have no commute and don't tend to have the "down time" most people use to consume podcasts. I downloaded a couple of the HD podcasts, and they look great! Nice to see the Zune team beefing up their HD podcasts....almost as if there's a device coming that would be perfect for sending them out to a HD TV screen... ;-)

How To: Make Your Audio Files Work As Podcasts

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 05:55 PM

http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/a...17/9229556.aspx

“The Zune has two styles of audio playback, one for music, and another for podcasts. For music, clicking right and left move you by song, and when you switch to another album, then come back to the first album, it starts you over at the beginning of the album. On the other hand, for podcasts, clicking right and left seeks through the episode, and when you return to a podcast, it resumes from where you left off. This is nice, because podcast episodes tend to be long, and the sequence is usually important.”

Have you ever wanted to know how to make your own podcast? (The correct answer is yes. Yeah, I’m talking to you.) The Old New Thing blog has a great “How To” post up about how to do just that with your own audio files. This would be extremely useful for those of you who have your own audio books on your computer. It's pretty easy so if you need to set something up like this and didn’t know how, now you can!

Podcast Playlists?

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Talk" @ 12:45 AM

As if the ability to resume podcasts and even send them wirelessly wasn't enough, the 2.5 firmware update also features the ability to watch your podcasts in sequence: when you end one episode of your podcast, it'll automatically advance to the next unplayed episode in the series. This is a change from what used to happen in the device (and still does in the software) in that instead of booting you out of the Now Playing screen and into your last menu screen at the end of an episode, it will now perform the logical action and keep the music/videos playing. This a nice little feature for things like news shows and music podcasts. You can exit out of the loop any time by pressing the back button.

Oh and just as a postscript, I wanted to note that the timing of this could be totally wrong (it may have been a feature since v2), but I've only noticed the video sequencing since the 2.5 update. Any other neat podcasting or general tricks? Let us know in the comments!

EDIT: Clarified play order sequence. It will play the next unplayed episode in reverse-chronological order (plays from the top of the list down).

Unsubscribe From Podcasts, Right On Your Zune!

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Talk" @ 10:00 PM

http://www.zuneboards.com/content/view/256/2/

I guess bufixes weren't all yesterday's firmware update included; reader Nick points out and Zune Boards confirms that a certain oft-requested feature has finally been added—you can now unsubscribe from podcasts right from your device. This is great for discovering podcasts and getting rid of the ones you don't like. Users with the 2.3 firmware update can check it out by playing a podcast and bringing up the menu by pressing the center button on the Zune30 or pressing down on the Zune Pad on the 4, 8, or 80. To unsubscribe, simply select "unsubscribe." Nice, right?

EDIT (12/20/07): A ZuneBoards commenter noticed that using "play all" while looking at an artist no longer sorts the list alphabetically by song title. Now, songs are played in alphabetical order by album title, then track number. Neat.

Zune Marketplace: Podcast of the Week

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Zune Talk" @ 04:00 PM

Hello everybody! For those who do not know me, my name is Rocco Augusto. I am a Contributing Editor for one of Zune Thought's sister sites, Smartphone Thoughts. It is a pleasure to be here today to bring you Zune Thoughts' first "Podcast of the Week" segment. Every week for as long as I can remember, the talented staff of this site has been bringing you the latest weekly freebies from the Zune Marketplace and with the current release of the new Zunes and the addition of the long awaited Podcasting support, it just seemed natural to incorporate this segment into the weekly flow of our favorite music player's news stories.

What we would like to do is bring you a weekly list of the top Podcasts that we have been obsessively listening to and hopefully bring something new into your lives that you never knew you were missing!

This week I am actually bringing you three of my all time favorite Podcasts, which all hail from the mighty TWiT Network. The first show I bring to you is this WEEK in TECH and it was voted Podcast of the Year at this year's Weblog Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada. this WEEK in TECH is brought to us weekly from hosts Leo Laporte (TechTV's "The Screen Savers"), John C. Dvorak, and an assortment of lovable other figures from our wonderful world of technology.

Next on the list we have Windows Weekly with Paul Thurrott. For those who are unfamiliar with Paul, he is a news editor for Windows IT Pro Magazine and is the only person I know of in tech who can bring out blood boiling rage from both Apple and Microsoft fan boys with the same sentence. Every week you can catch Leo and Paul as they bring us the latest and greatest news from the land of Redmond, as well as the occasional iPhone tidbits (we won't hold this against them), and even some video game reviews.

Last but not least we have net@nite, which is brought to us by Leo Laporte (I know, he's everywhere!) and the amazingly talented and beautiful Amber MacArthur (TechTV's "Call For Help" and CP24's "Webnation"). Every week you can sit down and listen to Amber and Leo discuss, and sometimes gossip, about the latest in Internet culture.

Thats all I have for you guys today but don't worry, I do plan on poking my head around the front page here at Zune Thoughts every now and again helping the rest of the crew here bring you the latest hot tidbits from my all time favorite digital music player! I'll see you guys on the forums!

"FeedYourZune is the perfect companion software for your new Zune Player from Microsoft! And it's 100% FREE to download and use! FeedYourZune is a full featured RSS reader and Podcast Media Player."

Zune is only a week old, and there's already a third-party application available to help you get more out of the device. FeedYourZune will download, manage, and sync podcasts and vodcasts over to your Zune. Microsoft is adding support for this later, but later is not soon enough, and that's where FeedYourZune saves the day. It's free, so go get it. :-)
