Zune 120 Now In Red & Blue

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 08:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105...g=rtcol;relnews

There's some new color options over at Zune Originals for the Zune 120! Unfortunately, neither are brown. (What? I happen to really have liked my brown Zune 30!) But you do have the option of either blue or red Zune 120s. I'm not sure when they might actually show up in stores but if you want one now for yourself or as a gift for the holidays, I think getting the Zune Original is worth it anyway. Its interesting to note that the blue and red models have a brushed aluminum back like the Zune 80 did rather than the glossy plastic. I assume that means that the red and blue zunes will also be a matte finish.

Donald Bell of cnet also reports that there is rumors of a white version but nothing official on that. Clearly a man of good taste as he also wants a brown version. I think we'll be waiting a long time on that one though!

Brand New Red Zune, $200 on Sellout Woot

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Buy & Sell" @ 10:09 PM

http://sellout.woot.com/Default.asp...cea88e1a8db630d

Typically when Woot sells expensive electronics, the devices are refurbished or in some way lesser quality (or brand) than their in-store counterparts. This time, Woot's got a brand-new Red Zune80 for only $200 (plus $5 for shipping). While $50 off sticker price isn't huge for Woot, you know this isn't going to last. Grab your Zunes before they're gone!

Promo Background Images for Your Zune

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Media" @ 02:38 AM

The Meet Zune section of Zune.net features a promo image of the different coloured Zune devices and a fruity mix of background images. Four of the background images have been made publicly available, courtesy of Zune Insider, and we've resized them to 240 x 320 for your consumption. You can find them after the break. Simply right-click an image and select "Save Picture As...". Next, sync the image to your Zune and follow these steps to set it as your new background. Enjoy!

Update: We've added the red koi background image, so all five are now available after the break.

Red Zune to Sell for $220 Exclusively at Target, Amazon for 30 Days

Posted by Damion Chaplin in "Zune Hardware" @ 12:00 PM

http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticleHomePage&art_aid=62043

"Microsoft unveiled the latest version of its Zune music player this week with an announcement that the new, brightly colored red Zune will go on sale at a retail location whose brand is closely aligned with the very same color - Target - and also at Target's online retail partner, Amazon.com. The red Zune will be available exclusively at Target and Amazon.com for 30 days beginning Sunday and then will be available at the same retail locations where Zune currently is sold thereafter. Red Zune will retail for $220 and have the same tech specs as its Zune peers."

The red Zune goes on sale tomorrow, but only at Target stores and Amazon.com, at least for 30 days. It will also debut at $220, which will nicely coincide with Father's Day, which is coming the following Sunday.

Interestingly, the iPod Amnesty Bin was mentioned at the end of the article: "The 'iPod Amnesty Bin' was a lighthearted gesture among Zune employees and was intended to be simply a humorous motivator for only the people who are working on the project," Ball says. "It was not a company-wide program, and the bin is no longer in the lobby of the Zune building." C'mon guys, it was a joke. You didn't need to take it away because some people didn't get it...

The watermelon red Zune is coming out on the 10th, and we're starting to see decent photos of it popping up here and there. Gizmodo has a gallery of six photos, all of them tasty looking.

Official "Watermelon Red" Zune Photos, Release Pegged for June 10th

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 03:23 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/04/red-zune-coming-on-june-10th-try-and-contain-your-excitement/

If you've been holding your breath for the release of the red Zune, you can start to exhale slowly - but make that exhale last six more days, because that's when the "watermelon red" Zune will be available from both Target or Amazon. It's quite interesting that Target has the retail lock on the red Zune - makes me wonder what kind of cross-promotional buy-in they made with Microsoft, and if the red Zune will be offered at a special price or with some sort of bundle. On November 14th, launch day of the Zune, Target was selling them for $249 but you received a $25 Target gift card with purchase, which greatly reduced the price of any accessories purchased. Maybe we'll see something similar again?

Have you been holding off buying a Zune until this red model is released? I know Mike Temporale from Smartphone Thoughts has been - anyone else? Two more pictures after the break (photos pulled from Engadget.com). Read more...

Back in the Saddle: Here's a Zune News Round-up

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 09:08 PM

Ever since going to CTIA to cover the show for Microsoft, I've been trying to get caught up on email - and building a new computer and reviewing it all in a few days only served to slow me down. At any rate, I'm back in the saddle again (to quote a great Aerosmith song), and here's some of the latest news on the Zune front from the past week:

  • The Pink Zune is Official: we knew this was coming, but Microsoft has confirmed that the light pink Zune is official and they're only going to make 100,000 of them. Here's what it looks like.
  • The "Watermelon Red" Zune is Unofficial: There have been rumours of a "vibrant" coloured Zune coming out, and it seems that colour is a vibrant red. People were convinced it was going to be an orange Zune, but I had a hunch that wasn't it. There are also rumours about the red Zune coming pre-loaded with sports content - an interesting twist.
  • EMI Music on Zune Marketplace Will Be DRM-Free: Once EMI announced they'd start selling music via iTunes without DRM, it was a short leap of logic to realize that this would be coming to other music stores. That means that, likely within the next month or two, we'll see the Zune Marketplace start to offer DRM-free music from EMI. It would be useful if the Zune Marketplace could sort by record label so we could see all the EMI tracks in one location, but that might be too much to ask. Will they be 256 kbps AAC files just like iTunes? Quite possibly. How much will they be? Regular songs are 79 points right now - so will they be 99 points? If you don't want to wait you can go to iTunes today and buy the non-DRM music in AAC format and put it on your Zune. Has anyone tried this yet?
  • Microsoft is Pondering Free Zune with Subscription Program: This is one of those small comments that has been blown out of proportion. Jason Reindorp, Microsoft's Zune marketing director, was "thinking aloud" and saying that the Zune team is exploring all options. Through the "magic" of the Internet, that turned into a flurry of "Microsoft to Give Away Zunes for Free" stories. This isn't a new idea - Napster started doing this last year, and when you consider the way prices on Flash memory have completely fallen into the toilet, the timing is certainly right for Microsoft to take this step. But are they ready for it? The first generation Zune still has so many problems, and is lacking so many features, that one has to wonder if it makes sense to launch new distribution business models before getting the basics down.
Comments? Which of these news items are you most excited about as a Zune owner?
