Broken Heart Leads to Broken Zune

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 06:59 AM

"I’ve been searching ebay lately for a deal on a Zune 8 and came across, what could be the best Zune auction ever. You know how the story goes, boy buys Zune then meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy meets new girl, boy cheats on old girl with new girl, old girl finds boy with new girl, girl runs over boy’s Zune with her car."

Ouch! The poor Zune. While I don't condone cheating this seems like a bit of overkill to me! I mean, the Zune didn't do anything to deserve such an awful fate. Why couldn't she have done something more civilized like key his Porsche or put superglue in his house's locks? Well, they say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and this backs that up. There's a couple more pictures at IHaveAZune.com but they aren't for those with a weak stomach.

My Two Randomly Rebooting Zune 8s

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 02:00 AM

I'm planning on writing a geek analysis of the gear that I brought with me to Japan, but there was one Zune-specific problem that I thought was worth writing about here on Zune Thoughts. Specifically, both of the Zune 8s I brought with me were a problem. ;-)

On the 11 hour flight from Vancouver to Japan, both my wife and I were listening to our respective Zunes: I had a customized red Zune 8 (Zune Originals) given to me by the Windows Vista team in January 2008, and my wife was using the green Zune 8 sent to me by the Zune team back in November 2007. Two different Zunes, likely manufactured several months apart, and both did exactly the same thing: rebooted randomly while we were listening to music. A single reboot is an excusable glitch; what happened instead was more than a dozen random reboots between the two Zunes over the course of an hour. It got so frustrating for both of us that we stopped listening to music on the Zunes and switched to watching movies on my laptop. It was really frustrating being on a two week vacation full of train rides not having a reliable MP3 player.

Upon returning home, I did some investigating, but could only find references to Zune 30s rebooting randomly. The odds of having two Zunes with exactly the same hardware problem would be very low, so I thought perhaps it was my music: I rip my CDs to 256 kbps MP3 using EAC and I embed album art inside the MP3 in the form of 600 x 600 JPEGs. I thought perhaps it was something about the header on the MP3 being too big for the Zune to process - I used my Zune 80 on a regular basis, but prior to Japan I rarely used either of the Zune 8s. To test the hypothesis of whether or not my MP3s were the problem, I ripped an album using the Zune desktop software and listened to it - and it rebooted several times over the course of an hour. I wasn't very pleased.

At the MVP Summit I asked the Zune team about this, and they said they were aware of the problem and were looking into it. If that sounds rather vague, it is, but I'm hopeful that since they knew about it that means it might get fixed eventually via a firmware update...and that's better than having two defective Zunes!

Vaja Case For Zune 4/8

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 12:04 PM

I've had mobile devices for a long time. I love my Zune but it’s only the latest toy I've gotten into in a long line of toys. One accessory that's always been important to me is a nice case and the company that has always made the best cases in both design and quality, in my opinion, is Vaja. I've only owned two of their cases and it’s been a long while since I've had a case from them. If they had a Zune 80 case, I'd pick one up in a heartbeat.

Well, if you own a Zune 4/8 you're in luck at least! I don't know how long this has been available but starting at $60 with a clip (pictured above) or $55 without. I do wish it had some sort of screen protection but I really like the idea of the clip. I'd give you all a direct link but Vaja's site doesn't appear to be cooperating with my attempt to get one!

Digital Trends : Zune Isn't So Bad

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 09:00 PM

http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/review4831_intro24162.html

“Like a phoenix rising from the flames, the new Zune may have a chance at a fresh, meaningful and lucrative life, free from teasing and taunting with which the original brown Zune was cursed. The 4GB and 8GB flash-based Zune has a new (albeit nano-like) compact design, a beautiful little LCD screen, quality accessories and substantial sound production. We at Digital Trends took the new Zune on a test drive and we've got a report for you. Read on to find out what we liked and disliked, and be sure to check out our short Zune video.”

Overall, I think Digital Trends gave a very fair review of the Zune 8. (Wow, last year when the first Zune came out I was frustrated every time I read a ‘review’. What difference a year makes in public perception.) One thing I found interesting was that they knocked the Marketplace as being difficult to sign in. I’m not sure why since they didn’t really go into detail about that and I know from my experience that it signs me in automatically.

I do notice that many reviewers aren’t sold still on the Marketplace and Digital Trends is no exception. I do give them props for giving the subscription model props, which was very refreshing to see. They still thought the software could use improvement though I wasn’t completely clear as to what other than to make it more like iTunes. I guess most people are used to iTunes so I can understand that a bit but I never could get into the program even long before my Zune days.

Overall though, Digital Trends liked the Zune and if you’re trying to decide still if you want the Zune 4/8 then this is a good read.
