Zune 80 Surgery: My DIY Battery Replacement

Posted by Ron Hostetter in "Zune Hardware" @ 07:00 AM

About a month or two ago, I started to notice that my beloved Zune 80's battery life was dwindling. I have several daily podcasts that I subscribe to, and in the last couple of weeks, I've needed to plug the Zune into an AC adapter just to keep it alive long enough to get through my podcasts. The other day, it finally quit for good. I was listening to some John Prine at work (an artist I had never listened to, but was able to sample because of my Zune Pass). The Zune made a subtle "pop" sound in the headphones and went dead. When I plugged it into my computer, the screen showed the battery charging icon, but never would boot up. It just stayed in an endless state of battery charging.

I bit the bullet and ordered a replacement battery from RapidRepair ($24.99). I chose overnight shipping since it was only one dollar more than standard shipping (huh?), and the battery arrived right on time. Tonight, I did the surgery.

Broken Zune 80 Given New Life With 32 GB SSD

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Hardware" @ 09:55 PM

http://www.andrewnprice.com/content...-zune-under-130

"Now there is no way I was going to pay $300 dollars for a MP3 player. You can get a netbook or an older laptop for that kind of money, and that to me is ridiculous. There is also no way that I could go back to anything less than 30Gb, (Which is what my previous H300 had) and well there was no way I was going to pay good money for a lumpy brown Zune. So that meant I was looking for a 2nd gen 80Gb Zune in black as a base. I knew to get the price point I wanted I would need to find a Zune that had "issues" and rehabilitate it, so it could return to normal life among the other Zunes in the "social". Since I knew I was going to replace the Zune's original drive, I simply searched around for a seller that was getting rid of a black 80Gb Zune, that was displaying error code 5 on boot. (Error 5 is Microsoft's way of telling you that your hard drive's cheese had slid off its respective cracker.)"

Now, I'm not sure your only option to get a Zune under $300 is to go out and get an SSD for a broken Zune 80, but it's certainly cool that this is even possible. If you were ever curious about the feasibility of using an SSD with your dying or dead Zune, Andrew's story is a worthwhile read. I was wondering how he managed to strip out a full-sized drive into such a small enclosure, and true to form, he didn't disappoint. Now all we need to find out is the speed/battery benefits to see how practical a mod like this actually is.

The Elite Crystal Case for Zune 80

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

Let's take a look at the ZuneOne Elite Crystal Case for the Zune 80 ($9.95 USD), shall we? The first thing you'll notice when you open the box is the the cardboard placeholder image with a mockup of the Zune screen and buttons. Oddly, the album art they chose, Macy Gray's "Big", was the same image used on all of the promotional materials for the first-generation iPhone. But I won't hold it against them. On the other side is the album art for Bitter:Sweet's The Mating Game, which was promoted with the first-generation Zune 30. The case is made out of a hard plastic shell that reminds me of many of the tape cassette boxes from the 90s. Though the plastic appears very sturdy, I can see it easily cracking if left in a back pocket or dropped from a significant height. Out of the gate, I noticed how snugly the case fit around my Zune 80, with a thin lip to snap the top to the bottom half of the case. There are small bumps to protect the back and play/pause buttons but the Zune Pad is left uncovered. This keeps the finish on the buttons but has the downside of making them more difficult to access. Belkin Acrylic Case For Zune 80

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Accessories" @ 08:30 PM

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProd...oduct_Id=404994

Belkin has been a provider of Zune accessories since the Zune 30s were released about 18 months ago, the majority of which have been cases. I’ve wanted a case for my Zune since I got it since I managed to scratch the screen on my Zune 30 pretty good and I didn’t want the same thing to happen to my Zune 80. The only catch was I didn’t want to hide my Zune under a case. I have a Zune Original and it seemed like it would be a waste if I couldn’t see it! Fortunately Belkin released an acrylic case that looked like it fit my bill. So, does it? Read more...
