FCC Tests 120GB Zune. New Models on the Way?

"Ever since Samsung had announced their new 120GB 1.8-inch hard drive in April 2007, Zune fansites has been buzzing with anticipation of a new Zune fitted with the higher capacity drives. Now the wait is nearly over as the FCC publishes a test report (and I assume approves) of the new 120GB Zunes. The 120GB Zune pictured above looks identical to the 80GB Zune and that's expected since the hard drive is of identical size too. The firmware used is nothing special too - version 2.5 (1614). Oh and in case you were wondering about the radiation emissions test results, the Zune passed with flying colors so it won't fry your body parts. Good to know."

So I guess Microsoft is planning on releasing a 120 GB version of the Zune80 (Zune120?), which shows little change from its smaller-capacity brethren. Why Zune would release such a player now is baffling. It is too far away from the Holiday Season to be part of gen3 (Zune4, 8 and 80 were announced in October), and it doesn't look like a special edition. Hopefully Microsoft will give us some answers, and soon.

So Microsoft put together a series of events in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle (a fourth was planned for Minneapolis, but was subsequently canceled) to showcase the new Zunes, and I didn't make it to any of them. Lucky for me, we have the Internet—that magical thing that allows me to live vicariously through other people—which is almost as good as being there. Stefan from IWantAPinkZune.com has a great write-up (or two) from the Seattle leg in which he shares how utterly cool these new devices are. I had originally planned to attend the NYC one, but due to prior obligations, I couldn't make it. That meant that my aptly-named "Questions to ask Cesar.txt" would sit idly on my desktop with no useful purpose. Thankfully, Stefan offered up a post in which he asked readers to submit their most burning questions. And submit I did.

Even More Leaks

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Talk" @ 06:45 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/01/are-these-the-new-zunes/

"Well, we'd heard new Zunes were coming tomorrow (or maybe October 16th) and it looks like retailers are starting to receive display units -- everyone, say hello to the new Zunes. Barring some Photoshop trickeration, it looks like we're getting two flash models and a slimmed-down hard drive edition."

Hot on the tails of the announcement of the product announcement and new firmware leakage comes this fresh tidbit from Zunescene member RCMADIAX showing cardboard mockups that were delivered to his branch of some Big Box electronics store. Further, they're only box one of two, the second is to be delivered tomorrow...stay very tuned!
