Zune Originals Canada Offers New Artwork for Valentine's Day

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 12:35 PM

"Starting today, Zune Originals, the online design studio that lets people customize Zune players with detailed laser engraving, is launching a new collection of Valentine's Day designs. Inspired by themes of music and love, the new collection features designs from artists like Canadian Gary Fernandez, Sanna Annukka and Si Scott that will make a great personalized gift for your sweetheart. Zune will offer customers free engraving (a $15 CDN value) for any design in the Valentine's Collection between January 15 and February 14. Zune is also making the Zune 120GB device widely available in red just in time for Valentine's Day at ZuneOriginals.ca and at major retailers nationwide including Amazon.ca (www.amazon.ca/zune), Future Shop and Best Buy."

The Zune in Canada still has no Marketplace, or Zune Pass, but that isn't stopping the Zune Canada team from releasing some splashy new designs in time for Valentine's Day. Can you sense my frustration at still having a half-launched product in this market six months later? That's a topic for another time. Here are the new artists who have contributed designs:

• "Gary Fernandez - new contributing artist to Zune Originals, this Vancouver BC-based illustrator and graphic designer created a fluid and rhythmic composition that represents the idea that music and love make the world go around.

• Rubens LP - a Brazilian-born illustrator who's new to Zune Originals says this piece is about kissing. That moment when time stops and 2 lovers find each other and the world disappears.

• Sanna Annukka - also a new contributor to Zune Originals, this design by Finnish-English illustrator and printmaker depicts two song birds entwined amidst a garden of flowers which are encouraged by music to blossom into explosions of pattern.

• Si Scott - new to Zune Originals and known for his unique blend of hand-inked design mixed with modern & traditional typography, Scott uses swans (known to mate for life) in his design to convey the universal belief that there's a true soul mate for everybody.

• Tado - second-time contributors to Zune Originals, the design-duo explains that this design is a light-hearted twist on a classic romantic evening."

As we get new product photos for the designs (the above one is the only one the PR firm has) we'll post them.

Blue Zune 120 Spotted, Still No Red Zune 120 in Sight

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 12:20 PM

Keen-eyed Zunerama forum member Johnny West spotted this gem amongst all the new Zunes announced last week: a blue Zune 120. I can't say I'm surprised by this, but better late than never - I was a bit irked back in September when the blue Zune was only available in the 8 GB capacity. I always think it's a bad idea to force customers to chose between aesthetics and features - soon, it seems like you won't have to...well, unless you like the colour red. You can still order a red Zune 80, but there's no sign of a red Zune 120. I have a red Zune 80, and it looks fantastic - I wonder why they're not offering this colour in a Zune 120?

The OTHER Zune Originals Artist Series Zunes

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 05:07 PM

Turns out that when I posted on the new Zune Originals artist series designs the other day, the source I linked to didn't have all of the images - ah, the joys of a fragmented PR release! At any rate, after the break there are six more designs: one by Alex Trochut, two by Alvara Arteaga, and one each by Ippei Gyobu, Kate Moross, and Siggi Eggerstsson. Read more...

Zune Originals Iosefatu Sua Chinese Astrology Series in Pictures

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 04:57 PM

The headline speaks for itself: these are the Iosefatu Sua Chinese Astrology Zune Originals designs. I'll point out the ultimate irony here since doubtless some of you will be thinking the same thing: because the Zune still lacks unicode support, it doesn't support any non-Latin character-based languages...meaning that anyone who has Chinese-language file names (or Japanese, or Korean, or Thai, or...) gets an ugly mess when that content is moved over onto the Zune. So you can have your Chinese astrological Zune, but you can't have your Chinese songs. Kind of sucky, no? They've got to get that fixed - you can't say you're all about music as a product team if you only support certain languages. The whole collection is found after the break - they look hot! Zune Originals Catalina Estrada ZODIAC Series in Pictures

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 04:41 PM

OK Zune fans, I scored images of all of the new Zune Originals designs that were announced today. If a picture is worth a thousand words, boy, do you guys have a lot of reading to do!

Oh, and if your a Pisces, you might not want to go outside...ever. The image I was sent was corrupt and wouldn't open. Uh-oh! The rest of the series is after the break. Read more...

OK, There Are Actually 46 New Zune Originals Designs

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 03:53 PM

"In addition to the new Artist Series designs, Zune Originals is also introducing the Zodiac Series, its first themed collection of designs that features 12 Eastern (Chinese) astrology signs created by Iosefatu Sua, a recognized Seattle artist and member of the Zune internal design team who creates street art with a Polynesian flair, and 12 Western astrology signs created by Catalina Estrada, a Colombian artist best known for her use of symmetrical patterns and vibrant colors."

Oh you crazy Zune PR team, tricking the world into thinking there were only six new Zune Originals coming, and really it's 46! The above screen shot was taken from the Canadian Zune Originals site, so it looks like all the designs are available on both sites. Some of the new designs are fantastic, like the dragon one above - and there's a sweet design called KobraKai that will please any snake-lover. Nice stuff!

Zune Originals Canadian Site to Feature Canadian Artists

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune News" @ 11:56 AM

"Just in case you didn't really believe Microsoft was finally bringing the Zune to Canada, along comes a release to make it doubly official. Aside from reiterating the June 13th launch date -- not to mention the $249.99 CDN (Zune 80), $189.99 CDN (Zune 8) and $139.99 CDN (Zune 4) price points -- Microsoft is also announcing seven new designs for its Zune Originals artist series. Fittingly, the mega-corp has tapped actual Canadian artists in order to find said designs, and considering that all Zune Originals artwork / engraving will be offered up gratis for three months after the launch day, you might as well indulge."

Well...darn. I knew about this a few weeks ago, but was waiting for permission from my contact at Microsoft Canada to release it. And here I go and get scooped by Microsoft releasing the news to PR Newswire. Sheesh. Stephane Dion has a great article on this topic - complete with a list of all the included artists and a couple of pictures of what the new Zunes will look like.

Red Zune 80 Now Available at Zune Originals

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 08:29 AM

You missed the red Zune for Valentine's Day? Boom! It's back and available for ordering from Zune Originals, complete with your choice of customization. I totally dig the red, but can't really justify buying one when my black Zune is working out just fine. Does anyone want to trade a red Zune 80 for a black Zune 80? ;-)

Zune Originals: Making It You

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 09:07 PM

Microsoft has launched, along with its very awesome new Zune players, website, software and overall new outlook on your portable music life, one more reason to want a Zune. The buzz started right before the Zune launched about the Zune Originals. The service allows you to get a Zune with a custom text engraving along with a choice of some very cool artwork to engrave along with it. I’m very seriously considering waiting for the Zune 80 to become available for the service because it looks really sweet. I recommend going over to the website just to play with the options and see the artwork. That may be enough to convince you! You can read Microsoft’s press release after the break.

"Microsoft Unveils Device Customization via New Zune Originals Store, New Zune Players Available Tomorrow

Microsoft partners with 18 renowned artists to fuse high style with portable entertainment.

REDMOND, Wash. — Nov. 12, 2007 — Tomorrow, consumers ready for a richer, more connected and more personal entertainment experience will have the first opportunity to get their hands on sleek new Zune players, redesigned Zune software, and new online services including the Zune Marketplace and Zune Social, an online music community. The players — along with dozens of accessories — will be available at retailers across the United States, while the new Zune software will be available for free download at http://www.zune.net. For the first time, consumers also will have the option to customize their Zune player with laser-engraved designs and personal text through a new Web store called Zune Originals."
