Running an Ad Blocker? Please Read This

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Status Updates" @ 03:00 PM

Hi there. The topic of ad blockers tends to generate some heated discussions around these parts, so I'm going to keep this really simple: if you're running an ad blocker, this is a polite request that you white-list this Web site and allow the ads to load. Here's why: I work hard to keep the ads on Thoughts Media sites non-intrusive; I say no to pop-ups, pop-unders, full-page ads, ads with sounds, etc. I know that those types of ads are irritating, and I value the readership of everyone who visits our sites. I don't want to irritate anyone with our ads.

What you may not realize about online ads is that, for the majority of them, when they simply load, that helps me pay the bills (our server bill alone is almost $500/month.). Ad blockers stop the ads from loading, which means they generate no revenue. That hurts my ability to generate income from this site - I have bills to pay just like you do. You don't have to click on the ads - just letting them load helps us out a lot. If you do click on them, all the better - that helps us get better advertisers because they know you're interested in the ads. It will help us continue to provide you with the content that you come here for, and that benefits you in the end. So please white list this Web site in your ad blocker.

If you have a particular dislike for the in-line text advertising - Vibrant Media's IntelliTXT ads - you can easily opt out of ever seeing those on any Thoughts Media site. Here's how.

As a side note, I have a personal "1 visit, 1 click" policy in which, when I visit a site and read/watch some content on it, I take a quick look to find an ad that I'm interested in and click on it. It only takes a few seconds of my time to do, and it's my way of giving back to that site, thanking them for creating that thing I just read/watched. The Internet would be a very different place if everyone had a similar policy. Just a thought to ponder as you head into the weekend. :-)

New Zune Retail Display

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 07:51 PM

"The next time you’re at an electronics store (if they’re still around), you might have to put some shades on if you’re to walk past the Zune display cabinet. Planned Marketing Solutions International (PMSI), an established creative agency out of Oregon, has been working on a redesign for the largely brown Zune retail displays that are in many US electronic stores today. They’ve recently put up some renders of this on their Flickr stream." - istartedsomething

Have you gotten a little tired of the retail displays for the Zune that have been around since the player hit the market? Microsoft must be or someone at PMSI felt they should be since they recently posted some renders of some potential new in-store displays. I can’t imagine most stores would dedicate such a large footprint to many products, let alone a Zune display. That said, these renders look very nice and I think having a display that takes at least some of these elements would certainly help the Zune’s retail presence a bit.

Who knows, there’s been talk of a Microsoft store too. They could easily have a display like this in one of their own stores! I like the one that’s all orange and square corners the best. It really makes a bigger statement to me than the other one does. But I think they’re both very nice.

In-Line Text Ads from Kontera

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Status Updates" @ 07:00 PM

I'm a bit over a week late with this announcement, so please forgive the tardiness: recently we switched from using Vibrant Media's IntelliTXT in-line product to using a similar product from Kontera. I know that some of you, specifically those of you who read by moving the mouse cursor across the text, don't like seeing these things pop up. I wanted to explain how to disable them: hover over one of the double-green underlined words, then click on the question mark that's inside that window. You'll be taken to a "What is ContentLink™?" page, and down at the very bottom of that page you'll see a link that you can click on to disable it from appearing again on this domain. It does this by placing a cookie on your machine, so if you use multiple computers or if you routinely purge the cookies on your system, you'll need to re-visit that page.

If you're not bothered by the Kontera ads, I'd certainly appreciate if it you could let them appear - you don't need to click on them to support us (though that's appreciated of course), just let them load. The funds from Kontera go toward paying for our two servers, bandwidth costs, and of course my bills so I can continue to run Thoughts Media as my full-time job. Thanks as always for your support - I couldn't do this without you, our community, supporting this site.

Zune Advertising Banners Starting to Appear

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 08:00 PM

Well, the Zune advertising campaign is starting to pick up speed - I hit Gizmodo today and saw a 160 x 600 tower banner. That's great to get the brand out there (even if we're still #17 in Google - doh! It sucks coming late to the party). What's a bit baffling though is that the banners link to the Coming Zune site. You know, the one that's so ultra-hip and cool that you don't really understand what it's trying to tell you, or that the Zune is a media player? I get the whole teaser campaign concept, but it's time to move beyond that now into something more concrete for perspective buyers to check out.

Zune Commercials Starting - In Movie Theatres?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 08:30 AM

"Don’t get me wrong, buzz ads, blogs, and banners are nice, but I wanted something more. Well when I went to the movies Friday, I saw my first Zune commercial. I had just got finished seeing the Gears of War commercial (don’t really like it, and had already seen it ) when surprise, surprise, I see Zunes on screen..."

Woody at Zune Corps reported seeing a Zune commercial before Man of The Year in a local movie theatre. It's great to see the Zune starting to go mainstream as it gets closer to the launch date, because it means when I say the word "Zune" people will start to have some concept of what I'm talking about. Brand recognition takes quite a while though, unless there's major mainstream exposure. The Zune team has to get a Zune on CSI, Desperate Housewives, or any other big TV show - that will get them some major brand recognition. I'm a bit surprised to see the movie ads though - much of the marketing up to this point has been solely focused on indy music bands and indy music blogs, and while that's fine to start things off, if they want to sell some serious numbers this holiday season, people need to know what the heck the Zune is.
