Crazy Rumor? Netflix On Your Zune

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 06:54 PM

http://t03.us/2009/04/netflix-coming-to-zune/

"VolvoShine: @HeathWhiteaker If I said Nothing Everyone Thinks, Fudge Lets Ignore his eXtra tweets. Thats All I can say for now"

There's all sorts of rumors flying around about the Zune right now. Keep in mind that there is absolutely no official word about this. Cruleworld's Lifestream spotted this one and its definitely a big deal if its true. Without coming out and saying it directly, Volvoshine has indicated that we should expect to see Netflix come to the Zune.

This is something that I would really want to see happen so I will say I am very excited if this is true. I think video subscription is key for the Zune. With that said I'm not sure what this would actually mean. Netflix streaming via Zune software doesn't make that much sense. If I'm at my computer then I could just stream via Netflix anyway.

Now could this mean that the next iteration of Zune software will allow streaming of Netflix via a WiFi connection? That seems to at least make more sense as an option. The only other way to get video onto the Zune would be via downloading it and Netflix has no current service like that. That would be my preference since that would let me watch video when I don't have a net connection but the potential to have Netflix streamed to the Zune itself could be a killer feature.

I don't know what this means but I can't wait to find out!

Rumor: Zune Touch in the Works?

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 11:30 AM

http://t03.us/2009/03/zune-touch-to...me-this-summer/

"While the picture to the left is confirmed to be a fake, we may know what the actual “Zune touch” will look like sometime this summer. My source is a user by the name of VolvoShine on twitter."

Zune needs something big for the holiday season and while I have no idea how accurate this rumor from Cruleworld's Lifestream may be, I think it would be a good release. And while the picture we've seen is a known fake, a touch version of the Zune would be very similar I think. I mean, there's really not much you can do with a touch device as far as looks. Its going to be a screen and maybe a button!

The Zune would do well with a larger screen for video. Especially if they could ever get some sort of subscription service going. I'm not letting go of that dream! My only hope, if this were announced, is that it used an HDD rather than flash memory because I don't feel that flash gives you a good value for your money with a device like this.

Zune Rumor : Wifi Music Store, 3G Zune, & More?

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 06:45 PM

http://gizmodo.com/367597/zune-3-de...+fi-music-store

“Microsoft France's Francois Ruault seems to be a bit more talkative on the Zune platform than he should be, inadvertently announcing that the third-generation Zune is going to launch during the holiday season of 2009 (which means there's actually no release this year—weird). Plus, there's going to be a Wi-Fi music store! What's interesting to EU readers is that Francois said the third-gen Zune will debut in Europe at the same time. What's even more interesting to people who don't care about Europe are the mobile capabilities, a.k.a., the music store.”

I spotted this over on Gizmodo but I honestly would take this with a grain of salt. Or perhaps a whole saltshaker. If it’s true then there’s good and bad here. I think a wireless music store would be great. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about that feature. But that release date is almost 2 years away. Apple is way ahead on that feature already. Given that the Zune suppose music subscription the utility of that feature would be phenomenal. Of course it’s hard to tell since the article is a translation if the date referred to the 3G Zunes or the music store. Is any of it true? Well, I’d say that there is probably some grains of truth in there but its impossible to verify them!

Zune 2 Rumors Again?

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 08:10 AM

Alright! The Zune 2 details have been confirmed by an insider over at Zune Scene. *insert record scratch noise here* Wait a second, let's hold up for JUST a moment. I debated even writing anything about this when I first saw this go up on Zune Scene. I should have known half the internet would pick up on it.

First of all, I fully believe Zune 2 is coming and coming soon. I wouldn't be surprised if it took a form similar to what we've seen in pictures but those pictures look so fake to me that I just can't believe that's the Zune in its final form.

I also question the color options as legitimate. Black is a no brainer. But red and pink as the ONLY other color choices? I just find it hard to believe that white wouldn't be an option. It's almost a requirement. And brown has been a very good seller. I think it's always been #2 behind black on Amazon.

October doesn't seem to be an unreasonable release month. But this source gave a very specific October 16th. I guess we'll have to see.

My issue with this 'interview' is that other than the release date (which the source covered themselves for by saying it was a target) every piece of information given was pretty vague. I could have acted as a source and given essentially the same information.

The Zune Phone is the kicker for me. If this all comes to pass, I'll eat my words. But I'm very skeptical of what I'm reading right now.

More Zune 2.0 Evidence

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.zunerama.com/articles_020.php#070908_zune_story

Zunerama has an interesting picture up of what appears to be an authentic product list with prices for Zune 2 accessories. The price list they give is as follows:

  • Zune AC Adapter (V2) - $29.99
  • Zune Cable Pack (V2) - $39.99
  • Zune Car Pack (V2) - $79.99
  • Zune Dock Pack (V2) - $49.99
  • Zune Home AV Pack (V2) - $99.99
  • Zune Sync Cable (V2) - $19.99

I’ll be honest though, the prices given here don’t hold much interest to me (There is something that interests me. More on that in a moment.). I also don’t think we need more ‘evidence’ the Zune 2 is coming. We already know that.

I find this list interesting because this indicates there is a substantial change to the hardware of the Zune. I’m trying to figure out what other reason Microsoft would need to release a version 2 of the sync cable. That’s not so great if that’s the case.

All of these new accessories really have me itching to see what the Zune 2 looks like, that’s for sure!

Rumor Alert: New Zune in August?

Posted by Aaron Roma in "Zune Talk" @ 12:05 PM

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/rumor-overheard-at-gdc-nextgen-zune-available-in-august-242095.php

"This is horribly irresponsible rumor-mongering, but we over heard this tidbit about the Zune over at GDC. Apparently, if the person was correct and our ears didn't fail us, the next-gen Zune will be available in August."

Obviously, this is nothing more than one giant rumor, but, word on the street (or at least over at Gizmodo) has it, a new Zune will be available in August. If this rumor pans out, I wonder if this new Zune will indeed be a "second" generation of a hard drive-based player or rather a new flash-based model.

Possible Zune Prototype?

Posted by Aaron Roma in "Zune Hardware" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/toshiba_gigabeat_p20k_and_p10k.php

"Now that Toshiba's just released the P20K and P10K flash-based players (which also look a bit like the Nano), we have to wonder whether this will be the hardware the flash-based Zune will use."

Here we are not even a day into launch, and there's already speculation on the next Zune models. We've known all along that the Zune isn't a single player, but an entire product line; we have just seen the beginning. Since it's common knowledge that Toshiba manufactured the first generation Zune, the folks over at Gizmodo wonder if this new release from Toshiba could be any indication of the future Zune competitor to the iPod Nano. As others have pointed out, I think Microsoft's long term plans call for more in-house designs for the Zune, as opposed to updating and re-branding another manufacture's design. Using Toshiba design for the first gen was most likely to facilitate a rush to hit the market. Now that Zune has hit the shelves for the holidays, the Zune team has a little more time to concentrate on future designs. While we are at it, what would you like to see in future Zune models, hardware wise?
