Zimbalam: Letting Artists Fly Solo

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.zimbalam.eu/

“When Stian, a friend of mine, came to me a few days ago and told me I could now find his music on various online music services I just had to find out how. It's no secret that record companies are becoming more and more uselss with most of them being sadistic about both stealing the artist's money and chase pirates, but I was unaware of just how easy it had become to publish music on your own.”

I don’t necessarily entirely agree with this statement over at AnythingButIpod but I think that most of us can agree that the music industry is a dinosaur that does as much to hold back artists today as it does to promote them. For a few years now I’ve wondered why many artists would really want to go the route of a big record company. For every successful artist that shows up on the radio there are hundreds of failures.

Rap With Bun B

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Content Creation & Management" @ 03:30 PM

http://www.rapalotrecords.com/RYouIITrill/

In continuing with Zune's support of Bun-B (formerly of UGK), the two have announced a new contest for budding armchair MCs to test their skills atop one of the Texas rapper's high-hat and bass-heavy beats. The skippy, Houston-flavored instrumental currently lacks any real interesting sounds, but that's where you come in! Rap, sing, sample, and drum atop the beat, just make sure you've got a) talent, and b) permission from the owners of your materials.

Interested parties can download the horrendously-titled Rap With Bun B (it sounds like the title of the accompanying CD to Alfonso Ribeiro's breakdance set) from the Marketplace, and add their own flow using any audio recording program. Winners (U.S. residents, 18+, drawn at random) will receive a round-trip ticket to Houston to take part in an upcoming compilation project. Read the press release, submit your tracks to Rap-A-Lot records, and may the best rapper win!

Zune Royalty Means Zilch for Artists?

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/29/steve_gordon_zune_royalties/

"Although this pattern of not paying artists for digital music sales is dreadful, the chances of artists seeing anything from the royalty placed on Zune is even worse. There is nothing in the standard recording agreement that says the labels must share income derived from licensing digital devices. Labels are only responsible for paying for exploitation of music, not licensing electronic devices. So why would the labels share anything with the artists when they already disregard clauses in the recording agreements that would benefit the artists?"

Ever since Universal revealed that it would receive a cut of revenue derived from Zune sales, I was skeptical as to whether the artists would receive even a cent of that. Steve Gordon at The Register tends to agree, and he offers some compelling reasons to explain his thinking. Give them a read and tell us what you think. Are artists really benefiting from these new sale agreements?

Preloaded Zune Tunes

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Media" @ 01:39 AM

Those of you with an Xbox 360 will know that Microsoft isn't new to the preloaded content game. Earlier in the month, our friends at Zune Insider and Madison and Pine revealed that the Zune would ship with some audio and video from a number of artists. While the final list is still under revision, we do have confirmed reports on four artists, and you can expect many more to be announced shortly. Bookmark this thread if you wish to stay updated!

Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS) - a Brazilian fusion of pop, rock, and electronica.
Hot Chip - an electro-pop band well-known to the UK.
30 Seconds to Mars - an alternative rock band that recently received an MTV nomination for the song, "The Kill".
Serena-Maneesh - a Norwegian indie group that has reached out to all corners of the globe.
