Zune HD Comes In More Capcacities / Colors Than We Thought

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Hardware" @ 07:30 AM

One bit of good news from yesterday's otherwise disheartening announcement is that the Zune HD won't be limited to one color per storage capacity. Until this point, the official position had been that the 16 GB version of the player would be available only in black, and the 32 GB version only in platinum, with three different colors available through the Zune Originals series at launch. Not so, says Paul Thurrott. Thurrott now confirms that the one-capacity, one-color restriction was for pre-orders of the device only. Come September 15, you'll be able to order a black 32 GB device and a platinum 16 GB device from the store. But if you're going to wait to pick up the device, you might as well order it from the Zune Originals website, and get a nice etching to go along with it.

Did the Zune 16 Make Apple Scramble to Keep Up?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune News" @ 10:47 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...o_headache.html

"Apple is notifying some of its customers this week that it will be unable to meet quoted delivery times for its new 16GB iPod nanos, fueling rumors that the company was forced to make a last minute change to the product line, possibly at the hands of rival Microsoft...there's been an increasing amount of evidence to suggest that 16GB models remain unavailable simply because Apple's original plans for the fourth-generation iPod nano leading up to last Tuesday's event called for only 4GB and 8GB configurations."

In the MP3 player market, Apple is the most dominant force around - but it seems that if these reports are true, the Zune player may have forced their hand in terms of capacity. Apple prides itself on having products in stores for sale shortly after they're announced, so for there to be a delay of more than two weeks for the 16 GB version of the Nano, something had to have happened to create the delay. Apple has huge manufacturing capacity for their iPods, so it's highly unlikely that they just "forgot" to put these 16 GB into production. And if the reports of marketing materials listing only 4 GB and 8 GB models are to be believed, it seems certain that Apple had no plans to launch a 16 GB Nano until Microsoft forced their hand.

Skipping Issue Workaround

Posted by Damion Chaplin in "Zune Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

"Some users have found that skipping or stuttering occurs in the first few seconds of songs. The skipping settles down after a few seconds, but then recurs with the next song. Through some collaboration in our Tech Support board, we've found some common characteristics that can cause this. The symptom occurs with Zune players that have been synced to capacity or near-capacity, and where a significant portion of that content has been downloaded through a Zune Pass subscription. We've passed those clues on to Microsoft (via David from Zunester), along with this surprising workaround: If you set your backlight to Always On, the symptoms disappear."

Yes, 'cause the backlight has oh so much to do with song playback and how much data you've got. I wish I could use the rolley-eyes smiley here. Anyone here encountered this error? I have not, but my Zune is not quite at capacity. This problem will no doubt be fixed in a future firmware update (crosses fingers), but in the meantime, I will be keeping this workaround in mind.
