Fix Coming for Zune Skipping Issue

Posted by Aaron Roma in "Zune Talk" @ 07:07 AM

http://zuneinsider.com/archive/2007/02/28/zune-firmware-update-1-3-coming-mid-march-skipping-fixed.aspx

"Yesterday I had a meeting w/ James, the Zune release manager and he spilled the beans on the next firmware update. In Mid March, we’re going to release Zune Firmware Update 1.3. Here’s what’s in the update: We’re fixing the skipping problem that some users were experiencing – that is, content acquired from Zune Marketplace will no longer skip when played on the device."

Well, apparently Microsoft HAS been listening, at least a little, and is finally responding to the skipping issue that many users have complained about. According to Cesar over at Zune Insider, we should see firmware update 1.3 sometime in mid March. This update will fix a few nagging problems, including the skipping issue, improved device detection and syncing, and an issue with the FM tuner draining the battery in sleep mode. Unfortunately, there is still no word on when we might start seeing some new features coming down the pipe.

Does Your Zune Skip? Read This

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 03:47 PM

"A few folks have expressed concern over skipping (Cesar looks at Sportsunit), so I wanted to address that here. If you have a Zune that isn’t skipping (which, truth be told, is the majority of owners), move along, nothing to see here, move along. But if the content from ZMP is skipping on your device, I want to tell you that the team is aware, and is working on it. Overall, the comments on this blog help the Zune team get a feel for what’s really happening out there among Zune users. We’re a new player on the scene, and I think it’s important for the team to stay connected – so, thanks for leaving comments and for the great discussion that goes on here."

Cesar Menendez did up a quick post about the skipping problem - so it seems that the Zune team knows about the problem, but there are no official details from the team as to why it happens. From what I've read in our forums and on other sites, the skipping seems to be linked to Zune Marketplace content, which is why people have wondered about DRM and CPU load being the culprit. Have you had the skipping problem? If so, have you "fixed" it or nailed down what causes it? I've heard bizarre things like it won't skip if you set the back light to always stay on. I wonder how/when the Zune team will address this problem?

Skipping Issue Workaround

Posted by Damion Chaplin in "Zune Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

"Some users have found that skipping or stuttering occurs in the first few seconds of songs. The skipping settles down after a few seconds, but then recurs with the next song. Through some collaboration in our Tech Support board, we've found some common characteristics that can cause this. The symptom occurs with Zune players that have been synced to capacity or near-capacity, and where a significant portion of that content has been downloaded through a Zune Pass subscription. We've passed those clues on to Microsoft (via David from Zunester), along with this surprising workaround: If you set your backlight to Always On, the symptoms disappear."

Yes, 'cause the backlight has oh so much to do with song playback and how much data you've got. I wish I could use the rolley-eyes smiley here. Anyone here encountered this error? I have not, but my Zune is not quite at capacity. This problem will no doubt be fixed in a future firmware update (crosses fingers), but in the meantime, I will be keeping this workaround in mind.

Zune Marketplace Song Playback Issue?

Posted by Aaron Roma in "Zune Talk" @ 09:00 AM

"When I have headphones plugged in, I'd say once out of every 5 songs the Zune starts skipping. Pausing the song in and out. Most of the time it fixes itself after say, about 15 seconds, and continues on with the song."

There have been some reports over at Zune Scene of users experience playback issues with songs downloaded from Zune Marketplace. Particularly, the issue is the songs appearing to "skip" at the beginning of playback. This issue appears to only affect songs download from the Marketplace, not import or ripped tracks. Personally I've not seen this, but I've done very little downloading from the Marketplace. Check out the above links for the relative posts. Have any of you experienced this skipping issue?
