Take the SMB (Small/Medium Business) Survey, Maybe Win a Prize

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Off Topic" @ 10:32 PM

I've had a crazy week, so I'm just getting to this now, but it's important so keep reading: if you're a small or medium-sized business (SMB) owner or decision maker, please take a few minutes and complete this survey. The information is being collected by some trustworthy friends of mine at Ivy Worldwide, and when you complete the survey (I did, it took about four minutes) you'll be entered in a random drawing to win a Lenovo A70z (valued at $729 USD), an LG Bluetooth headset, an LG Bluetooth stereo headset, or an LG Bluetooth solar car kit & emergency charger. Fast, simple, and prizes to be had. What could be easier? The survey closes today (Monday) though, so act fast!

Microsoft Exploring Other Zune Orignals Designs?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 07:50 PM

I received a survey tonight, on behalf of Microsoft's Zune group, asking me questions about my experience ordering my Zune Originals Zune, a red Zune 80. Most of the questions were quite mundane, asking me about my thoughts on the ease of use of the site, speed of ordering/shipping, etc. The one question that caught my eye is shown above: Microsoft is obviously guaging reaction to the idea of doing new Zune Orignals designs. Trimmed out of the screen shot were other options, including popular brands (Adidas, Burton, Pepsi), gaming (Sonic, Mario, Halo), cartoon/anime (Naruto, Spongebox Squarepants), colleges (Duke, UCLA), professional sports teams (NFL, NBA), and movie characters. I think the ability to upload your own design would be a killer addition to Zune Originals - people could have a lot of fun with that!

Help Us Out, Fill Out This Survey

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Off Topic" @ 09:00 AM

In order to keep running these sites, we need to sell advertising - it's just part of how things work online. Advertisers like to know general demographic information about the type of people visiting a site before they'll buy ads on it, and our advertising partner (NetShelter) has need of some new basic demographic information.

If you can take about three minutes to fill out the survey, I'd greatly appreciate it. The survey questions weren't written by myself, so don't complain to me if you don't like them. ;-) Also, the survey isn't mobile-device compatible, so please use a desktop PC to complete the survey. Thank you for your support!

The survey can be found here.

UPDATE: Due to a copy/paste error on my part, I had the URL for Smartphone Thoughts instead of Zune Thoughts. So if you filled out the survey and it said Smartphone Thoughts at the top, please re-do the survey for Zune Thoughts. Thank you!

Survey Claims 70% of Zune Owners Want Out

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 10:04 PM

According to a study put out by Eagle Research Group and pounced upon by every Apple fan site on the Internet, a whopping 70% of Zune owners are going to switch to an iPod or an iPhone when their current phone contract is up. That’s about all I’m going to bother quoting from this absolutely absurd story that’s flying around the web. My advice is to not believe a word of this. The flaws in this whole thing are gaping holes wide enough to fly a Zune through! What problems do I have?

  • Take a look at Eagle Research Group’s website. I’ve never heard of these guys before. Their website looks like something I designed when I was fifteen years old. This mysterious survey isn’t available anywhere so I have no idea where anyone even got the information from.
  • The numbers don’t make any sense on the heels of Microsoft’s announcement that not only had they met their goal of one million Zunes sold but they had surpassed it by 20%.
  • And let’s not forget the initial point of the survey. People were going to switch to an iPod or an iPhone when their current (phone) contract runs out. Why would anyone wait for their phone contract to run out before switching to an iPod. Either the language in the supposed study was poorly worded or there are actually people out there who seem to think an iPod needs a phone plan. That doesn’t give me much confidence in the study.
Without any details on this study, I personally wouldn’t recommend giving it any weight. If ERG makes their study public then maybe I’ll reconsider. I’ve met very few people who own a Zune but of the people I have met, they have universally loved it. Something doesn’t compute here.

ABI Research Survey: 58% of iPod Owners Planning Another MP3 Player Purchase Will Consider Microsoft's Zune

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 10:30 AM

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/061101/20061101005644.html?.v=1

"A new survey conducted by ABI Research has shown that many prospective MP3 player buyers-even owners of iPods-would be likely to choose Microsoft's Zune player. 1725 teenage and adult US residents were asked whether they planned to buy an MP3 player in the next 12 months. Of those responding that they were likely to do so, 58% of those identifying themselves as existing iPod owners and 59% of those who owned other brands said they would be "somewhat likely" or "extremely likely" to choose a Microsoft Zune player over an iPod or another brand of MP3 player. "Our conclusion," says principal analyst Steve Wilson, "is that iPod users don't display the same passionate loyalty to iPods that Macintosh users have historically shown for their Apple products." Only 15% of iPod owners said they were "not very likely" or "not at all likely" to choose Zune."

Now that's some surprising information! I've always assumed that because the iPod has such massive control in the marketplace, and people kept buying iPod after iPod, that the Zune would have a tough time with current iPod owners (which is a good chunk of the market). The iPod fanboy sites would certainly have you believe that anyway, but this survey calls that into question. Assuming that the survey is an accurate gauge of the overall buying population, this is great news for the Zune. What do you think - are you a current iPod owner, and are you considering a Zune?

[Bonus points: can anyone point out why I used the above photo?]
